WestPorts: It was reported that its business may be affected by a new shipping alliance.
The unveiling of the P3 alliance’s planned port rotations would see Port Klang receiving a reduced number of calls from liners that ply the Asia North Europe trade and the Asia Mediterranean trade.
Westports confirmed that negative impact of P3 alliance on its business. A route revision of shipping firms under the P3 alliance will see les port calls at its port terminal.
PTP in southern Johor stands to be the big gainer from the rotation move by P3 allaince whose three members are Maersk Line, Mediterranean Shipping Co and CMA CGM.
CMA CGM is using Westports in Port Klang as its hub.
It was reported that the consolidation of three line’s SEA transshipment hubs on the Asia-Europe trade lane will see Port Klang receiving number of weekly calls to North Europe shrink from three calls each to only one.
Maersk, MC and CMA CGM are currently (Oct 2013) hubbed in PTP, PSA in Singapore WestPorts Malaysia, respectively.
The alliance aims to start operations in May 2014, pending regularly approvals in the US, Europe and China. Westports derives 70% of its revenue from transshipments where super sized ships move containers carrying finished goods to smaller vessels fro transport to nearly markets.
However till Oct 2013, it has not been informed by its customers of any material changes to their hubbing strategy or throughput volumes and further, the P3 service routing only represents a portion of their volumes to WestPorts. |
