IT company offers no severance for layed off workers

There are more layoffs Monday in Austin's IT industry. This time chip manufacturer, Spansion, made cuts without offering severance.

You may recall Spansion made headlines a week and a half ago when we found out they owed Travis County over eight million dollars in back taxes. Spansion has since paid most of that and made plans to pay the rest over the next few months.

Seth Campbell reported to work here at the Southeast Austin Spansion facility for 13 years. Monday morning he was laid off without a severance package.

"Even if you're completely prepared for it, I think just about anybody experiences it as a shock. You go through a little resentment throw a bit of anger on top of that,” Campbell said.

The chip manufacturer is expected to cut 35 percent of its staff. The company will not confirm how many of the 1200 Austin employees will be let go.

“We are undertaking a reduction in force today, but out of respect for our employees we wish to finish the process before providing any details," Spansion Public Relations Director Holly Burkhart said.

Campbell says it's the end of an emotional rollercoaster. In December, he was placed on a mandatory furlough followed by a cut in pay. He has only worked two weeks since then.

"It's just unknown so you're tapping into resources you may need to get you through a longer period of time of unemployment,” Campbell said.

Now with less money he is starting to search for a new position. The job pool in his field is drying up.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission computer manufacturing jobs are down 10 percent in Austin. Since November, Freescale Semicondutor has laid off 228 employees and Sun Microsystems 19. Those are just the ones that have been reported to the commission. Two weeks ago applied materials announced it will put employees on a four week furlough in June.

Austin economist Angelos Angelou says the technical industry is "especially hard hit because [companies] rely on business growth," and he expects "more layoffs this year and partially into 2010. This is not a recession that can just blow over in a couple of months,” Angelous said.

Campbell is working on more certifications to enhance his job skills. But right now the most important thing is maintaining a normal home life.

“My oldest daughter is a big dancer so she'll continue her dance classes. My younger one is a basketball player and she's continuing with her basketball. We'll find other ways to compensate to make sure those activities will go on,” Campbell said.

The Texas Workforce Commission has more sobering information for Texans who lose their jobs. They say the state's unemployment fund is quickly losing money. They estimate by October the fund will have just over 100 million dollars. Usually they try to have over 800 million dollars on hand to help out-of-work Texans. State lawmakers are working on plans to replenish the fund.

可以申请VSS，但如果你不是裁员list的其中一个，那你申请VSS的话也等于你放弃继续留在公司，要不要博看你自己。。。
