[size=1.6em]SINGAPORE: Ride-sharing platform Grab on Monday (Jun 13) announced its first cross-border carpooling service by allowing commuters to hitch a ride with drivers travelling between Johor Bahru and Singapore.

[size=1.6em]The GrabHitch JB-SG service, which will be launched next Monday, costs an average of S$12 or RM36 for a round trip. Fares are calculated based on the distance of the ride and a fixed cross-border surcharge, and are shown upfront so passengers can decide if they are comfortable with the price before confirming the booking.

[size=1.6em]For example, taking the service from Woodlands in Singapore to the City Square mall in Johor costs about S$9, or RM9 for the same route from Johor to Singapore. If using the service from Woodlands to Sutera Mall in Skudai, the fare would be about S$13, or RM17 for the same route from Johor to Singapore.

[size=1.6em]“Passengers pay a minimal fee to enjoy the comfort and convenience of a private car for the long commute, while drivers get to defray the cost of driving across the border. The typical round trip cost of driving between SG and JB is around S$50 or RM150, which includes Vehicle Entry Permit fees, fuel and toll costs,” the company said.

[size=1.6em]Passengers can pre-book rides up to seven days in advance, and up to 30 minutes before the pickup time by selecting a pickup and drop-off location. Drivers and passengers will be notified when a successful match of the route is found.

[size=1.6em]An estimated 400,000 commuters pass through the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints daily, Grab said, citing figures from Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Malaysia’s Immigration Department.

[size=1.6em]Grab said it conducted a survey of commuters who travel regularly between Johor Bahru and Singapore, and found that close to nine in 10 commuters (88 per cent) were open to hitching a ride from Johor to Singapore. The poll also found that 89 per cent of respondents who own a private vehicle were willing to give commuters a lift.

[size=1.6em]Cost-sharing was the biggest motivation for both drivers and passengers, it said.

[size=1.6em]“The high cost of travelling, frequent congestion and lack of point-to-point transportation between Johor Bahru and Singapore are compelling reasons for us to introduce the GrabHitch JB-SG service,” said Ngiam Xin Wei, head of GrabHitch.
