Earthquake Strikes North Japan; Highest Tsunami Alert Issued
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struckoff the coast of northern Japan, shaking buildings violently inTokyo, according to the U.S. Geological Service. A tsunami ofmore than 10 meters was reported in northern Japan.
The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. local time 130 kilometers (81miles) off the coast of Sendai north of Tokyo, at a depth of 24kilometers, USGS said. The Japan Meteorological Agency issuedits highest tsunami warning for the country’s northeast coast.
National broadcaster NHK Television showed images of peoplegetting medical treatment and footage of a tsunami engulfing awarehouse in Kamaishi in Iwate prefecture, with cars and truckssubmerged. Ships were shown smashing into harbor walls on NHK.
Tokyo’s Narita airport shut down, Kyodo News reported.Haneda, the capital’s other main airport, was also closed, NHKsaid.
The government set up an earthquake response team after thetemblor struck 373 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. Prime Minister Naoto Kan returned to his office from parliament to convene histeam. Smoke can be seen rising from buildings in central Tokyo.
In Iwaki city, north of Tokyo, cars were washed away as thetsunami came ashore, pictures from NHK showed. Many injurieswere reported in Miyagi prefecture north of Tokyo following thequake, Kyodo News said.
The quake registered 7 on the Japanese seismic scale, thehighest level, in some areas north of Tokyo.
Tohoku Electric Power Co. stopped operations at its Onagawanuclear power plant, spokesman Satoru Ishii. Tokyo ElectricPower Co. shut seven reactors at its Fukushima Daiichi and Dainiplants, Kyodo said.
Idemitsu Kosan Co. said it’s checking on the status of itsChiba refinery near Tokyo. Bullet train services were haltedfollowing the quake, East Japan Railway Co. said on its website.
Tsunami warnings were issued for Pacific countriesincluding Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua NewGuinea.
