The Firm and self-review
Written on 8/11/2008 03:22:00 AM by heli4ntuse
Bismillah..
2 days ago, I watched The Firm Season 2 on TV. It is based on The Apprentice though it is slightly different in the format. Team Equity won as expected. They did a great job for the seminar. They were creative in term of presentation; they composed a theme song, the presenters were confident and the seminar was invigorating. No sign of boredom written on audience's faces. And I think that the group leader was successful at maintaining the group's togetherness. Each and every tasks was given to the right person even though I could see a person was complaining a lot for not having better task. But overall, they are happy and satisfied with their individual jobs. Maybe they are aware that no matter how small was the task, it is their responsibility to give their very best. Bravo!
Meanwhile in opposing team, Asset, there were a lot of weaknesses shown by the team as a whole. They weren't satisfied with each other, not open to critics and opinions, self-centered and the worse thing is they are stabbing in each other's back. Some of them were lobbying others to stand up for them. Even though they are good at promoting the products (except for one silly mistake done by the presenter..) they failed at drawing the audience's interest throughout the seminar. Even Asset's own members weren't supportive and showed a disapproval face while the presenter were in front.
Whoa..even though this is a small scale of bad politics, it does shows that individualism and intolerance are viruses in a teamwork. It did happen even in students' societies. I saw it myself even though it is not as serious as involving in bribes and rumors which ruin one's dignity and credibility. But still as time passes by, as another step is taken to climb the ladder, I'd get to see more and more of these. However, I pray to Him for not to be involved in dirty works, not even a little.
So, back to The Firm. At the end of the show, I was wondering (the fact is, still wondering) what kind of team player do I portray.
Am I Salasiah who played safe and considered as insignificant despite of the effort I put?
Am I Ain who talked a lot, spoke her mind but never walked the talk? (I want to see her as a group leader next week)
Am I Ridzwan who was pissed off with my own members for not given a significant role in the seminar?
Am I the other member of Asset who wouldn't want to accept critics and learn from them?

Terence的部落格
I’m Game … for some Reality (episode 2)
I just go back home from an official dinner function with close to 100 aspiring leaders in an NGO at a hotel in the bright city of KL. I didn’t managed to catch myself on the tele tonight, but thanks to NTV7 and the creator of broadband, I managed to catch-up on The Firm, Season 2 (Episode 2) on the Internet here.
I couldn’t sleep after watching this episode…. Oh no wait…. I couldn’t sleep watching the previous episode too. The Firm is giving me insomnia….hahaha…. I’m pretty sure some of the other contestants are having insomnia too.
Viewers who follow the show, or happen to switch channels to NTV7 between 8.30pm and 8.45pm would have been made known by now that I’ve decided to leave the ‘reality show’.
Now, that was real. I left and didn’t looked back.
Hmmm…. I’m sure you are dying to know the real story and reasons for my departure from ‘reality’, right?
OK, perhaps not dying but definitely a burning question to you. No? Then, you may choose not to continue reading now. Otherwise, click on the link below and find out….hehehe….
On screen, there is this certain ‘clash of chemistry’ between me and the woman who labeled me “Drama King”. Something like having durian and assam laksa all at once. (Ya.Ya. I’m a person who is fond of using analogy - because I see things from a kindergarten’s perspective….hahaha…)
I’m accepting such distinctive recognition (the title of “Drama King”) because it was bestowed upon me by ‘Her Highness’ herself - “THE Drama Queen”. It’s not easy to get distinction from your peers nowadays, I must admit. And mind you, from ‘one of the best’ some more (pardon my Malaysia slang here).
Off screen, the act of being cool about it was even more real than on TV!
Why did I leave The Firm?
1. I peeped through my black briefcase of Common Sense, and all observations, information and evaluations gathered thus far was really glaring to me - I just don’t fit in a drama or in Malaysian fashion, ‘Sandiwara’. I honestly believe I don’t look, behave, speak, and at times can’t ‘really’ act in front of the camera as well as the others. In show biz, that’s not very promising.
2. Remember how I described this ‘reality show’ against the scene of a football match and poker game. I realised after task 1, I couldn’t be as deceiving (like in a poker game) as well as certain players can, an I wasn’t brought up to see a different perspective of a ‘fair game’ (like in a football game) in such a competition.
3. I’m a firm believer - In life there are always choices. Sometimes we choose not to recognise these choices, while other times we fails to take courage and make them. I chose to participate, and therefore I can also choose to leave.
4. The shooting schedule was too time consuming for me - than earlier expected.
5. And then, there were unexpected change of work commitments and schedule back in my real corporate world.
Did I regret joining The Firm?
No. But I regretted leaving.
Why I regretted leaving The Firm?
I missed working with a bunch of wonderful people.
(I can almost hear at the corner of the table, a soft exclamation “Liar”, coming out from a certain member of team Asset… maybe more.)
Hahaha….
Seriously, I regretted leaving this ‘reality show’ because I still haven’t perfected the skill of spotting real actors from the ‘real’ actors. Remember, I was secretly learning the ‘tricks of the trade’ in TV show production. How can I be an award winning producer/director if I haven’t mastered the skill of spotting real actors to star in my future ‘reality show’? (I’m not being gender biased here - when I said “actors”, I also meant “actresses”).
What have I learned from episode 2?
When you see trouble ahead, you can gather your courage and wisdom to challenge it. When you see shit ahead, don’t try and step on it and hope your feet ain’t gonna stink like shit and people will applaud your courageous act!
Pardon my language once again…. I’m not as optimistic as others here (or then).
I’ve worked long enough, seen corporate politics more than enough, been in challenging teams more than enough, shot and being shot more than enough, being in engaging situations more than enough…. to try being optimistic and continued in this ‘reality’ of theirs.
I’ve learned that at times, it’s not bad to refuse moving forward and step aside - especially when our instincts and gut feel tell us so (not to mention - our little black briefcase of Common Sense)
That’s more ‘real’ than anything else…..hehehe….
Happy watching The Firm, Season 2!
