Malai(马來) = 印度语是『山』的意思
Malaya =  印度语是『很多山』的意思

古印度人乘船东来时以吉打日萊峯为标记,也称这是 Malaya。考古发现在Bujang谷的古国正是富有兴都教／佛教色彩的王国。

马来半島最古老的王国不是马六甲,而是吉打蘇丹王朝!

Melayu(马來人)=印尼文是『山上的人』之意。印尼其他部族称为Suku Malai/orang malai

The Japanese began their attack on British Malaya the same day as Pearl Harbor. The Japanese entered Malaya overland from the north and the fortified base of Singapore fell on 15 February, 1942 and was held with the rest of Malaya by the Japanese until August 1945. Malaysian script is in dollars (Straits or Malayan dollars) and therefore is often, mistakenly, thought to be for the invasion of the United States. In 1942 the Japanese issued paper script currency of 1, 5, 10 and 50 cents and 1, 5 and 10 dollars. In 1944, inflation lead to the issuing of a 100 dollar note. In 1945, a replacement note 100 dollar bill was issued as well as a hyper-inflation 1,000 note. The 1942 series of notes, including the 50c and 1, 5, 10, and the 1944/45 100 dollar all contained the text [The Japanese Government] “Promise To Pay The Bearer On Demand”. Interestingly, the 1944 100 dollar replacement note no longer contained this message.


Japanese Invasion Money - Malaysia


With metals being a needed war-material the Japanese did not issue any coinage during their occupations. All occupation currency, including denominations of less than one dollar, was printed on paper. However, the [Money Museum of the Bank Negara Malaysia] in Kuala Lumpur has on display a pattern coin clearly proving that occupation coinage was considered. The pattern on display is a 20 cent aluminum pattern coin inscribed on the obverse with the name MALAYSIA, and the date 2602, which translated from the Japanese calendar is 1942 A.D. Inscribed on the reverse is a typical Japanese design of a sun ray with sakura flowers, with 20 CENTS at the top.
It is interesting that the name MALAYSIA was used on a pattern coin of 1942, given that the name for this country was not changed from MALAYA to MALAYSIA until 16 September, 1963. However, that name had actually been in common use since the 19th Century. Mr. Saran Singh of the Malaysian Numismatic Society received verification from the Osaka Finance Ministry, Japan, that this pattern coin had indeed been minted at the Osaka Mint, and that the name MALAYSIA was the Japanese name for that region, at that time. [7]

这是一个耐人寻味的历史。
友人因为当年钱不够国家博物院多。 在拍卖会上失去了拥有这枚钱币的机会。
他也曾写信到日本政府一证实这枚钱币的官方发行的事实。
虽然我没有看到这个日本官方回复， 不过据他讲他拥有这份文书。
如果属实， 马来西亚的概念是日本提出的。
据说当时的＂马来西亚概念＂包括马来亚， 印尼， 沙砂, 文莱和菲律宾， 并不包括新加坡。 听说而已。。。

The name "Malaysia" was adopted in 1963 when the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo and Sarawak formed a 14-state federation.[7] Yet, the name itself had been vaguely used to refer to unspecified areas in Southeast Asia. A map published in 1914 in Chicago has the word Malaysia printed on it referring to certain territories within the Malay Archipelago.[22] The Philippines once contemplated to name their state "Malaysia" but Malaysia adopted the name first in 1963 before the Philippines could act further on the matter. [23] Other names were contemplated for the 1963 federation. Among them was Langkasuka; Langkasuka was an old kingdom located at the upper section of the Malay Peninsula in the first millennium of the common era.[24]

Even farther into history, English ethnologist George Samuel Windsor Earl in volume IV of Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia in 1850 proposed to name the islands of Indonesia as Melayunesia or Indunesia though he favored the former.[25]

马来西亚，Malaysia一字的意思也有可能是指整个马来群岛。

假如根据 webster's online dictionary的解说"SIA" is a name that signifies or is derived from: "moving", "help".那么Malaysia，也可以被解释为马来向前进。

真真的马来西亚其实很早被提出了，其实马来西亚的名词第一次被提出是马来西亚的领袖，听说，他相信有一天东马会和西马团结，听说那个人就是-dato onn bin jaafar,也就是现任巫统副主席希山幕丁的公公。

现在的意思是melayu，me+layu，意思是枯萎着。。。

我想如果这问题问马来人，melayu是什么意思，他们也答不出来吧。
自己民族的名字还要借用外族语言的名词来取。。。

爪哇(Jawa)人的話中，melayu是指離傢出走。我國真的不少外來的人，Jawa, Minangkabau, Bugis等等。我公司裏的三個馬來同事都承認其實他們父母親是印尼來的，只是因著政策得到優惠，他們也沒理由去反對。好像只有吉蘭丹的馬來人纔是土生土長的，中國古代稱吉蘭丹為赤土。

1963 年和新加坡统一，然后把新加坡的英文名Singapore的 S 和 I 加入 Malaya 的中间，形成 MalaySIa。

原因就是那么简单，根本没你想象中那么复杂。。。
