EATERIES around Beauty World Centre are reporting a surge in business after the Downtown Line 2 opened, especially on weekends when customers flock over from other parts of Singapore.
Stall owners at Beauty World Food Centre said they see 40 per cent more customers on weekends while restaurants along Cheong Chin Nam Road operate at full-house on those days.
"Business is a lot better than before the Downtown Line 2 opened although there are always more people during the Chinese New Year period," said Lai Chong Lee, 70, owner of Beauty World Nian Re Gao which sells snacks, cakes and Chinese New Year goodies.
At one point, business at the open air hawker centre was so brisk that cleaners had no time to clear dishes on the table.
Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao reported dishes strewn on the floors of the centre after customers resorted to clearing their own tables.
But Mr Lai, who is also a trustee of the food centre, said that happened only during those first six days when the trains were running for free.
Chua Yow Ngoo, 62, who runs Jia Jia Shu Shi stall selling Hokkien mee, said in Mandarin: "There were just too many people. Look at the cleaners, many of them are old. They cannot cope with the crowd."
Hawkers said the weekday crowd has improved too, especially during lunch time when they see 20 per cent more customers than before the train line opened.
Some customers come from as far away as Aljunied, said Mr Lai.
Mall security officer Kartick Saii, 23, recounted how a man came in for the first time in a decade looking for the Indian barber shop he used to frequent. "The new train line is bringing back many old shoppers from when Beauty World used to be popular," said Mr Kartick.
Across the road, business has also improved for the row of eateries along Cheong Chin Nam Road since the opening of Beauty World MRT Station on Dec 27.
Business languished at the previously-popular dining stretch during the six-year construction of the Downtown Line, with two stores forced to closed down.
"We definitely see more people now, even outside of the usual lunch and dinner crowds," said Hafiq Khan, a 22-year-old cashier at Al Azhar Eating Restaurant.
Elwyn Chan, 34, owner of Stirling Bar and Grill, said his eatery, which can seat 70 customers, experienced large crowds on the weekends.
"It's not just us, all the restaurants have full houses on the weekends," he added.
Mr Chan noted that long queues can be seen stretching out of the restaurants on weekend evenings.
A regular customer of Al Azhar Eating Restaurant, 33-year-old graphic designer Farhan Hassan said: "It's so convenient to get there now, there's no reason to drive there anymore." |

“企業是很多比市區2號線開通,雖然有在中國新年期間總是更多的人以前好多了,”賴崇利,70,絕代雙嬌年再高的車主主要銷售零食,蛋糕和中國農曆新年說好吃的東西。
在一個點上,在露天小販中心的業務是如此亮眼的清潔劑沒有時間來清除在桌子上的菜。
中國晚報聯合晚報報導菜散落在中心的樓層後,客戶使出清理自己的表。
但黎先生,誰也是食品中心的理事,他說,只有當列車免費運行發生在最初的六天。
蔡佑Ngoo,62,誰運行佳佳暑濕擺攤賣福建面,用普通話說:“有太多的人看的清潔劑,其中不少是老人,他們無法應付的人群。”

馬路對面,業務也改善了沿昌金南道的餐館,因為美世界地鐵站的12月27開幕的行。
六年的建設市區線的中業凋敝在先前流行的餐飲舒展,有兩家店被迫關閉。
“我們確實看到越來越多的人,現在,外連平時午餐和晚餐的人群中,”Hafiq汗,一個22歲的收銀員艾資哈爾吃餐廳說。
埃爾溫陳,34歲,斯特林酒吧和燒烤店的老闆說,他的餐館,可容納70多個客戶,經歷了上週末大量觀眾。
“這不只是我們,所有的餐館都在週末滿房,”他補充說。
陳先生指出,大排長龍可以看到伸出的週末晚上的餐廳。
艾資哈爾吃餐廳的常客,33歲的平面設計師爾漢·哈桑說:“這是太方便了,現在到那裡,我們沒有理由開車到那裡了。” |
