SINGAPORE : Humanitarian organisation Mercy Relief has deployed a second relief team - a three-man team - to Japan to bolster its aid efforts there.

In an update, the organisation said its first two-man team in Japan has established the logistics supply network in the northern part of quake- and tsunami-affected areas near Iwate.

Operating amidst sub-zero temperatures, the team is now able to procure relief supplies from several unaffected neighbouring prefectures.

The supplies are being transported to the various shelter centres holding the survivors, who have been evacuated from the disaster-affected areas.

Mercy Relief's initial tranche of relief supplies comprising blankets, water and food amounts to US$50,000.

The organisation added it is currently serving the areas which are a safe distance outside the radiation-hazard zone.

A unit at Mercy Relief's headquarters in Singapore is monitoring the radiation alerts and advice from the Japanese government as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Mercy Relief added it has received its largest donation of S$200,000 from a group of four donors.

This brings the total amount it has raised to S$394,219.

The public can continue to support Mercy Relief by donating through various modes.

For cheque donations, the cheques have to be crossed to 'Mercy Relief Limited', indicating 'Japan Quake and Tsunami Relief' on the reverse, and sent to 160 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh #01-1568, Singapore 310160

Cash donations can be made personally at 160 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh #01-1568, Singapore 310160

For those donating via ATMs or Internet banking, they can transfer donations directly to Mercy Relief's DBS Current Account 054-900493-6

Those using credit cards can do so via eNets at http://www.mercyrelief.org.

Donations from the public will be used to address the most pressing basic needs, including food, water and blankets which will be procured on the ground and dispatched from Mercy Relief's ready stockpile.
