好久没写了,班竹和网友们假如不介意就让我在这里涂鸦一下,就写写不会怎么proofread。还请多多见谅。

Chapter 1:
Guard Ainslie, of the Dawson zone, had finished her duty patrolling the cells for the night, but was too exhausted to remember to file for repair work log to improve the living conditions of old Alexia's cell. Accompanied by the faint twinkling star light that squeezed themselves through the tiny gaps between these densely packed honeycombs, she lurched back to her cell, laid her spear down at a dark corner of the cell, drew herself a small glass of honey from a lone closet, and made her way up to bed.

As soon as Guard Ainslie fell sound asleep there was a stirring and a rustling all around old Alexia's cell. Word had spread during the day that old Alexia, the oldest and wisest of the residents of the Dawson zone, had had an epiphany on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the community. The bees had agreed that they should all meet in the nearby storage cell as soon as Guard Ainslie was safely out of the way. Old Alexia was so highly regarded by her friends that everyone was very much ready to lose an hour's sleep in order to hear what she had to say.

With the door to the storage cell forcibly broke open, the bees moved in and made themsevles comfortable in their own fashions. On one side of the storage cell, on a sort of raised platform formed by excess beeswax secreted by a careless worker bee during a previous reconstruction, old Alexia ensconced on a bed of recent blue bonnet pollen harvest. She was 4 months old and had lately undergone emaciation, but was still a stout-looking bee, with a wise and carefree appearance in spite of the fact that her antennae stretched down from her forehead to almost touching the floor, ready to detect the slightest sign of change in the surroundings. Following closely behind the old Alexia was Maceoin, a nursing bee fast approaching her middle life, who had never had a single record of losing a larvae due to negligence. Her new passion of life, the young male drone Nelson, came in together, walking very slowly and flirting his antennae, hoping to draw attention to its yellow tips, a unique social status symbol for the male drones.  Both settled down immediately on the other side of the cell and young Nelson began to buzz and shiver feebly to heat himself up. The builder bee twins, Debbie and Gwen, came in together, trotting across the cell and setting down their herculean body mass with great care lest the beeswax beneath them might break lose. Debbie was an overgrown worker bee, nearly twelve antennae high, and as strong as any two ordinary builder bees put together. The smaller size of her mandibles gave her a somewhat disproportion appearance, nevertheless, she was universally respected for her prowess and skill in the building art. Gwen was a stout looking motherly figure, who had never quite got her personage back after a recent building accident. After the builder bees came the nectar and pollen collectors, and Christy, the pollen packer. As the only worker at the packing facility, Christy had the worst temperament and seemed to hang on to a cynical, suspicious semblance all her life -- for instance, she would say that the hive had given her a task to pack pollens, but she would sooner have had no hive nor a task to perform. Alone among the bees in the Dawson zone, she never laughed, when prompted why, she would retort that she saw nothing to laugh at. Nevertheless, despite her evidently attitudinal problems, she was a prized worker by all standards; the herald of winter would put her to quietly labor for hours and hours alone in the packing cell, producing sufficient refined pollens to feed twice the hive's population.

The builder bee twins had just lain down when a swarm of smallish bees, whose responsibilities were to clean and to prepare the dead for burial,  filed into the facility with their antennae lowered and a resemblance barren of all emotions, and wandered from side to side to find some place where they would not be noticed.  As they drew close, the crowd avoided them and made a sort of half circle round them over the other end of the room. Before long, the collector bees, and O'Shaig, their leader, came marching in. O'shaig, who was not of first rate intelligence, was well respected for his steadiness in character and tremendous perseverance. His unusually large bee sting made him stood out from the rest. The troopers took a place near the back of the crowd and began murmuring amongst themselves without due concern for what brought them here.

All of the bees were now present and waiting attentively. Alexia cleared her throat and began:
"Fellow comrades of the Dawson zone, you have heard already of the strange insights that I had last night. But I will come to that later, for I have something else to say first. My strength is waning that, I do not think, I shall be with you for many weeks longer, and before I die, I feel obliged to pass on to you such vision as I have acquired. I have had a long life, more time for thought than most as I lay alone in my cell, and I might say that I understand the nature of a bee's life. It is about this that I wish to speak to you."
"Now, comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours? Let's face it: we lead a miserable, laborious and short life. The second we are born, we are given just so much food to keep the breadth in our bodies, and are forced to work till the last ounce of strength in the atoms of our body exhausts; the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end, we are exiled, abandoned to the mercy of our predators. Not one of us know the meaning of happiness or leisure after he is born, and none of us is free to choose a favorable course of action. The life of a worker bee is all but misery and slavery: that is the plain simple truth."
"However, is this simply part of the order of nature? Is it because the flora surrounding the hive is so scarce that we cannot afford a decent life for ourselves? No, comrades, a thousand times no! The hive's mangers are all fully stocked, its workers are resourceful, it is capable of affording food in abundance to a far greater number of bees than now inhabit it - and all of them living in a comfort and a blithe beyond our imagining. Why then do we trudge ourselves in this miserable condition? Because nearly the whole of the produce of our labor is stolen from us by the Queen, Eliza, and her male drones. There, comrades, is our answer to all our problems. Remove the Queen and her counterparts, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished forever."
"They are the only bees who consume without producing. They do not harvest, they do not build, they are too weak to repair, they cannot work fast enough to pack pollens. Yet they are above all of us, setting us to work, giving back to us the bare minimum that will prevent us from starving, and the rest they keep for themselves. Our labor feeds the hive, our sweat waxes the honeycombs, and yet there is none of us who owns more than her bare skin. You collector bees that I see before me, how many hours have you spent harvesting this week? And what happened to the honey and pollens which should have better used to breed up the larvae? Every bit of that has gone down the fat belly of the males. And you, Debbie and Gwen, how many hours have you spent toiling with hive expansions and repair jobs, yet they want to squeeze two of us into each cell? And you, Christy, the fastest worker in the pollen packing facility, what has happened to the pollens you packed before the last winter? In return for all your labor, what have you ever had except your bare rations and a small cell that is barely enough to fit the two of us?"

”Even then the miserable lives we lead do not usually reach their natural span. For myself I do not grumble, for I am one of the lucky ones. I am 4 months old and have lived longer than many others. But no bees escape the final abandonment by the hive in the end. You young troopers who are with us tonight, every one of you will be dried and deprived of a proper burial upon your death within a few months. To that horror we all must come - workers, packers, nurses, everyone. Even the undertaker bees themselves have no better fate. You, O'Shaig, the very day those great wings of yours lose their power, you ration will be cut and left outside to be dried by the sun before the undertaker bees drop your lifeless carcass a few meters away from the hive. As for the builder bees, when you grow old and hapless, you become part of the debris that the hive was made of. "
"Is it not crystal clear, then, comrades, that all the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of the Queen and her legion of male drones? Only get rid of them, and the produce of our labor would be our own. Almost overnight we can become rich and free. What then must we do? Why, work night and day, body and soul, for the overthrow of them! That is my message to you, comrades: Rebellion! I do not know when justice will be done, it might be in a week or in a hundred months, but I know, as surely as I see the floor beneath my feet, that sooner or later the day will come. Fix your eyes on that, comrades, pass on this message of mine to those who come after you, so that future generations shall carry on the struggle until it is victorious."
"And remember, comrades, your resolution must not falter. No argument and propaganda must lead you astray. Never listen when they tell you that the queen and her drones share a common interest as you, or so that the prosperity of the one is the prosperity of the others. It is all lies! The queen and her legion serve the interest of no bees except themselves. And among us, the helots, let there be perfect unity, perfect comradeship in the struggle. Henceforth, all helots are comrades sharing a common cause!"
