AEON to venture into Sabah and Sarawak
KUCHING: AEON Co (M) Bhd’s (AEONs) management plans to penetrate the east coast of the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak where it has no presence.
OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) stated that AEON planned to open two to three outlets per year going forward. In 2012, two confirmed outlets were slated to open in Ipoh and Manjung in Perak.
The analyst added that AEON was expected to open one outlet each in Kedah, Johor and Penang in 2013 and 2014. The group would maintain its strategy as a residential area mall and penetrate the small towns.
AEON ceased to manage 1 Utama (1U) shopping mall phase one and temporarily closed its department and supermarket in the mall.
However, the group managed to spring back in the third quarter with sales growth of 5.8 per cent year-on-year and profit growth of 5.5 per cent year-on-year on reopening as a brand anchor tenant in 1U.
OSK Research viewed AEON as a unique business model as a department strore-cum-shopping all operator which located its outlets near residential areas and targeted the mass market.

KL is AEON’s platform for regional expansion
EVA YEONG
sunbiz@thesundaily.com
KUALA LUMPUR (March 9, 2012): Japanese retail giant AEON Co Ltd plans to use its Asean head office here to spearhead its expansion into other Asean countries over the next two to three years.
In Malaysia, the company also planned a RM350 million capital expenditure (capex) for new shopping malls and department stores as well as internal refurbishment this year. Last year, it spent some RM400 million.
AEON Co (M) Bhd (AEON Malaysia) chairman Datuk Abdullah Mohd Yusof said the group in Japan planned to venture into Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia.
"They have already set up (stores) in China, Hong Kong and Thailand," he told reporters during the launch of its new brand name, tagline and member card yesterday.
AEON Malaysia managing director Nur Qamarina Chew said: "We have established the Asean head office last year and we have leaders in each country in the region. Now we're preparing for the big day. In two to three years' time, we will have our identity in various countries in the region."
On the Malaysian operations, Qamarina said most of the RM350 million capex would be invested in its 20th shopping mall (or 25th department store) in Ipoh and 21st shopping mall (or 26th department store) in Sri Manjung, Perak, which will be opened this month and end of the year, respectively.
She added that it is also exploring the potential in Sabah and Sarawak, and is confident of contributing to the modernisation of the retail industry in those states.
Abdullah said the company has been opening an average of 1.5 stores annually as the cost of land and building (if it develops the mall instead of leasing premises) can go up to RM200 million.
"Our malls and stores are mostly funded by internally generated cash," he said.
AEON Malaysia executive director of corporate finance and investor relations Poh Ying Loo said the company will spend RM10 million this year on its two-year rebranding exercise, which will cost a total of RM15 million.
The exercise includes a new brand name (AEON) and tagline (AEON Enriching Your Lifestyle) as well as store refurbishments and upgrading of customer services, in a move towards globalisation.
Qamarina said the company expects turnover to grow at least 6% this year. Last year, it reported a RM2.9 billion share of the total Malaysian retail market turnover of RM18 billion. |
