Synopsis

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a large molecule that functions as the genetic material of all living things and some viruses. It was first extracted by Friedrich Miescher in 1869, four years after Gregor Mendel presented his seminal paper describing the principles that laid the scientific foundation of genetics. Since then, many scientists have contributed to the unravelling of the structure and function of DNA, in parallel with our increasing knowledge in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and recombinant DNA technology.

In this lecture, the beauty and magic of DNA as a fabulous molecule that stores, transmits, and regulates genetic information will be discussed. The language of life is made up of four alphabets, A, C, G, and T. The sequence of these four alphabets in DNA generates messages and patterns of DNA which are handed down from generation to generation and travel through time and space to tell us the past and the present.

From the knowledge of the structure and function of DNA gained, many applications have been possible and have reached the marketplace, in the form of products or services, generating diverse activities in modern biotechnology. Examples will be discussed.

My research on the use of chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA in human identification in Malaysia and on Nipah virus (a virus carrying RNA, ribonucleic acid, as the genetic material) will be presented. RNA is closely related to DNA and comprises four alphabets, A, C, G, and U.

A snapshot of the more recent scientific activities involving DNA, RNA, and proteins will be put forward, with relevance to the proposed activities in biotechnology in Malaysia.
