“It had been raining for the past 3 hours and the rains were getting heavier by the minute. I was in the kitchen with mom preparing the evening meal of fried cabbage, ginger chicken and the kids’ favorite ABC soup. Dad was setting the table and my 3 kids, Yi Wen aged 6, Jin Yao aged 5 and Jin Wei aged 2 were watching television in the living room with our maid. All of us were on the side of the house away from the slope.”

“I remember vaguely that they were watching Tom and Jerry. I remember I called my husband, asking him when he will be home for dinner.( He works in Lojing Highlands)He replied that he was in Brinchang and told me later that my call came at 6.37pm.”

“Suddenly there was this loud thunderous boom sound. I turned to my Dad and asked “Is that thun……?” Before I could finish there was this “ kree epp cre ..iap..sounds,” the ceiling collapsed onto us and we were thrown down. We were trapped in this little space. The kitchen cupboards had collapsed, the walls had come apart, the ceiling panels were on top of us and it was very difficult to move. All around us were wooden splinters and metal pieces jutting at odd angles. I flew into a panic. “Where are the kids? God, where are the kids?”

“What a relief when I could hear the sound of their voices from the living room. They were crying in fear. The maid called out to say that they were ok. Dad and I maneuvered into the living room through a tiny opening and found Yi Wen and Jin Wei protected by the family safe. It blocked the fallen tree branches and logs from hurting them. But I could not find my other son. “Stay calm” I told myself. I called out to him and found Jin Yao cowering by the side of our piano. It had blocked the earth, debris and a huge log from reaching him. It literally saved his life.”

“We tried to exit through the main door but it had buckled and could not be opened. We tried the window but it was stuck too. We finally escaped though a gap between the walls and the cement foundation as our wooden house had shifted. We brought the kids out one by one. We were drenched to the bone but I did not care. We were all safe. I called my husband again. It was 6.45pm”
