An unmanned hypersonic jet failed and broke up seconds into a test flight yesterday in the latest setback to hit one of the US military's most cutting-edge engineering projects, which could now be under threat.
The X-51A Waverider was designed to hit speeds of up to 3,600mph, six-times the speeds of sound, for a period of five minutes after being dropped from a B-52 bomber during a high-altitude flight.

The craft was successfully launched from its mothership during its test-flight on Tuesday, its development team disclosed yesterday, and everything seemed to be fine initially when its rocket booster engaged, firing it away at rapid speed. But a faulty control fin meant the prototype’s main engine – the revolutionary but still largely untested supersonic-combustion ramjet, or “scramjet” as it is known – was unable to start.

Controllers realised they had a problem just 16 seconds after the Waverider’s rocket booster engaged. When it detached 15 seconds later, the machine quickly lost control and disintegrated, sending the remains crashed into an area of the Pacific Ocean north-west of Los Angeles at Point Mugu.

"It is unfortunate that a problem with this sub-system caused a termination before we could light the scramjet engine," said Charlie Brink from the Air Force Research Laboratory at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. "All our data showed we had created the right conditions for engine ignition and we were very hopeful to meet our test objectives.”

Hopes had been high for the project, which has been looking into the possibility of developing technologies allowing the US Air Force to launch ultrafast strikes on enemy targets – as well as allowing a potential successor to Concorde to fly from London to New York in just one hour.

The first test flight of the experimental jet in 2010 was largely successful, with the Waverider reaching a velocity of five-times the speed of sound for three minutes. A problem with the rocket booster not separating from the main craft sent the second trial falling into the sea last year, however.

Reports said that the control subsystem which was at fault in the latest trial had previously proved to be reliable.

With only four of the X-51A vehicles having been built, it is unclear when or if the final model will be used.

Good that this failed. Hypersonic civilian jets would be a good thing, I suppose, but Pentagon was after faster missiles. The world doesn't need faster, but fewer missiles.

You might be right but I do wonder if this might make the launching of spacecraft a bit cheaper one day. Rather than using bottled oxygen right from the launch it could use atmospheric oxygen until it got too high.

Ok, apparently outside links lead to moderation, so without the link to Skylon: Japan has civilian plans of this nature and has flown test flights, GB has the mostly privately funded, unmanned single stage to orbit Skylon that is now getting some development money for it's SABRE engines from ESA.

Hypersonic missiles wouldn't liberate a single person from oppression. These kind of high-tech weaponry target basically China and Russia and are intended to get past their air defenses.

I think so. I think I'd be hoping the missiles would stop dropping on me..but hey, that's just me. Perhaps you'd wanan fire some back or have more drop on you?

Since the violence in Syria is mainly by and because of the Syrian rebels who are actually just foreign mercenaries and the crazy end of the Muslim world such as al-Qaeda, I'd say it is lucky for the Syrian Christians, Alaawites and Shiites as well as moderate Sunnis that the Syrian army is well enough armed to repel these terrorists.

Raimo Kangasniemi • a day ago
It's easier to get money for military and development of military tech than to peaceful purposes in the US political system. Peaceful purposes can be easily claimed to be just waste of money, but few politicians there dare to criticize military spending of this nature, as doing so is seen as unpatriotic.

Ron E. Thorpe • 8 hours ago
The reality is, Ian, that the militaries of Russia and America have had Antigravity craft for more than a generation and have been paled up since the sixties to fend off possible and expected parasitic ET forces. The coverup is so convoluted and damning that the PTB will go to their deaths before they will allow full disclosure as that will surely be the deaths of many monster criminals who will be exposed. Nonetheless the positive ET forces of this universe are ameliorating the impact of the negatives and have changed the game plan. All the projected scenarios reeling out from these old plans are just possibles and not absolutes and have been largely changed so as to soften the changeover to a Galactic Civilization. People are hoggwashed by all this talk of rocketry and atmospheric craft without shields is ludicrous. What can this hope to achieve considering the technologies they hide from us. The secrets will not continue intact for much longer. A fall is coming but we souls have support from the Spiritual Hierarchy and the ET community gathered here now to reveal themselves despite attempts to stop it. Very soon now...
