Washington— Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it is recalling more than 650 2013 Lexus GS 350 cars because the steering wheel could be dramatically off-center because of a software flaw. The Japanese automaker said the recall covers some two-wheel drive F Sport grade Lexus GS350s. The steering control programming could cause the steering wheel to become off-centered by a maximum of 110 degrees when restarting immediately after the vehicle is parked with the steering wheel turned. If this occurs and a driver does not realize that the steering wheel is off-centered when pulling from a parked position, the vehicle could maneuver in an unexpected direction and result in a crash. Toyota discovered the issue on Feb. 15 during an in-house test drive. The history in the vehicle's steering control computer indicated that, although the vehicle was parked with the steering wheel turned, the VGRS angle data was reset to 0 degrees right after the restart. Toyota told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that if the ignition is turned on again shortly after the ignition is turned off, the system may default to 0 degrees, causing the steering wheel to become off-centered. The system was updated on Feb. 23 to eliminate the possibility of the steering wheel becoming off-centered. Vehicles still within Toyota's control were also updated. Owners will be notified next month. In the wake of Toyota's recall of more than 10 million vehicles for unintended acceleration, the automaker has worked to address potential safety issues faster. Toyota was fined nearly $50 million in 2010 by NHTSA for failing to recall vehicles in a timely fashion.
