The Wall Street Journal claims that the next version of the iPad is now in production. They cite "people familiar with the matter".

The new device will be thinner, lighter and will come with a faster processor, more memory and a more powerful graphics processor, said the people familiar with the matter. It will have a front-facing camera for the first time for features like video-conferencing, but the resolution of the new iPad's display will be similar to the first iPad, they said.

The new iPad will be available through both Verizon and AT&T but not Sprint or T-Mobile, according to the newspaper.

Macotakara claims that Apple is planning to conduct a short media event at the end of February to launch the next generation iPad. The site offers few other details, though seems to think the actual availability of the iPad 2 will be in March.

We're not sure about the accuracy of the information, but the timing seems reasonable. Apple is widely known to be prepping the next generation iPad. There have been reports of iPad 2 prototypes being spotted and there was also an unconfirmed tip that a television commercial for the iPad 2 had already been shot in LA last week.

Apple Planning iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 Event Next Week



As I reported you about a New York Times report which claims that iOS 4.3 may be released for public on February 13th just after the arrival of Verizon iPhone 4 by 3 days. MacNotes.de reporting that Apple is planning an event for next week to introduce the iPad 2.
The report speculates that Apple will announce a special iOS 4.3 media event to introduce in-app subscriptions, an announcement Apple vice president Eddy Cue revealed would be coming soon during yesterday's introduction of The Daily. The announcement of iPad 2 may come as a “One more thing” surprise at the end of that event.

Besides, John Gruber of Daring Fireball reports that  iOS 4.3 will be likely released in the next two weeks to provide support for in-app subscription payments for The Daily before the free two-week trial runs out. iOS 4.3 will also bring Personal Hot Spot feature to iOS devices.

Reuters reports that a prototype model of an unreleased iPad was spotted at today's launch of The Daily.

A Reuters eyewitness saw what appeared to be a working model of the next iPad with a front-facing camera at the top edge of the glass screen at a press conference to mark the debut of News Corp's Daily online paper in New York on Wednesday.

The new iPad was identified by the front-facing camera that is widely expected in the next version of the iPad. According to a separate Reuters source, the device's existence was said to be "confirmed" though the final release model could have other features.

The iPad 2 has filled the rumormill over the past few months. It is expected to ship in the first quarter of this year.

iFixYouri and 9to5Mac have posted photos of what is said to be the new iPad 2 screen.

At this point, we cannot tell if the resolution is higher (or "Retina") but it is definitely higher quality in terms of its build. The iPad 2's display is also lighter, and over a mm thinner than the current iPad's display with a smaller surrounding frame.

No other details (such as resolution) have been revealed, but the slightly thinner screen agrees with previous analyst reports that claim that the iPad 2's screen will be 30-35% thinner as well as offering an anti-reflective coating for better outdoor usage.

Apple is widely expected to release a new iPad in the first quarter of this year.

Update: One commenter at 9 to 5 Mac has deciphered the new screen's model number of LP097X02-SLN1 as indicating a 9.7-inch H-IPS display from LG with the same 1024 x 768 resolution as the current iPad.

这个我也考虑中，但昨天某IT人跟我说，你现在买xoom，还要等好几个月，android 的app 才会完全适应 3.0 版本。
就是说，开始那一段日子，绝大部分app 都没有3.0 版本。。。。。

相对之下，ipad 2 不会有这个问题，你一买的哪一刻，就几十万app 等你去用。。。。

等到来，ipad 3 都来了。。。。

然后就是，对于pad 来说，解析度的重要性比较次要，除非你是打算好像手机一样，把ipad 放在距离眼睛半尺距离使用。。。
但我还是很期待机器人3.0 带来的惊喜。。。。千万别好像galaxy tab 那样，完全被那个价钱吓倒。。。。。
