拉曼大学资深学者纷纷辞职及背后原因

这则新闻是从网上《自由今日大马》截取而来的,刚刚在昨天傍晚发布。所谓无风不起浪,事实上的确有很多有实力的老师都已经辞职。所以值得大家关注以及讨论。

Senior Utar academics quit over 'tamper' order

PETALING JAYA: Almost 30% of Universiti TunkuAbdul Rahman's (Utar) academic staff have resigned due to several newpolicies, including a directive to “tamper” with student results.
The unpopular policies were introduced by a new management team, who were originally from the Multimedia University (MMU).

A source in Utar revealed that since the new 10-member team took over, the staff turnover had been exceptionally high.

“I can say the new management has driven out about 30% of its academic staff and 70% of its support staff.

“Manyof the academic staff are shocked and disgusted with the directiveordering them to tamper with students' marks and achievements,” thesource said.

The source said soon after the new management camein early last year, they displaced other senior administrative andacademic staff.

“Soon after the MMU team arrived early lastyear, they grabbed all the key positions in the university, includingthe presidency, vice-presidency, directorship and heads of departments.”

“Aboutthree of them who were not professors when they arrived in Utar wereprompty awarded their professorship. They did not undergo anyevaluation process.

“They were also favoured to replace seniorUtar staff. Many of the senior academics were unhappy and theyresigned,” the source said.

Unfair practices

The source said the new management had also implemented various policies, which did not augur well with the staff.

“For example, the doctorate staff were required to publish a certain number of research papers annually.

“Theassistant professors were required to complete one research paper ayear, while associate professors had to complete two in a year. Fullprofessors had to submit three research papers.

“The problem with the new rule is that Utar does not have enough facilities to support research work.

“Besides,any application to purchase equipment for research will undergo a veryslow and tedious process before getting approved or rejected.”

Toadd to the load, the source said it was difficult for the academicstaff to research and write so many papers when they had to mark 200scripts within five days at regular intervals.

“That's a lot ofwork and if you a make a mistake marking, the staff will be penalisedwith a warning letter,” the source said, claiming, however, that formerMMU staff who had moved to Utar were for some reason exempted fromthese criteria and regulations.

“The deans who were aligned to the new management are not required to teach.

“Infact, even if they failed to get their articles published ininternational journals according to the requirement, they were let offthe hook,” the source said.

Draw of green pastures

Meanwhile,a former support staff, Jansi (not her real name), who used to workwith Utar foundation studies department, said she quit because of thenew management’s arrogant and high-handed approach.

“We wereasked to remain quiet during staff meetings. If we raised an argumentover the management's policies, we were slapped with warnings.

“Thosewho were too opiniated were normally transferred to Utar’s Kamparbranch in Perak and this included women who had just given birth or gotmarried,” said Jansi.

She said when the staff wrote a complaintletter to the president, he just dismissed it, saying the management'sdecision represented his views as well.

“In a nutshell, themanagement team is not qualified at all to dictate things as they donot know what is happening on the ground,” said Jansi.

Whencontacted, Utar's manager for corporate communications Chiew Siau Meisaid that she had no data on the high staff turnover rate.

She,however, said that it was only natural for staff to look for greenerpastures if they had been given a better offer, suggesting that thosewho left Utar had done so for a better paycheque.

She added that Utar was a “big organisation and always strives to put in new policies to improve itself”.

- 强烈觉得,是员工不满 UTAR 管理层太严厉对付他们 也有针对 MMU 跳槽过来 UTAR的员工的嫌疑. 也不想想他们平常是有多么脸臭臭
- 自从新管理层上来后,觉得 UTAR 更成熟了, 而且添加了满多新器材.
- 那个发表论文,应该是为了提高讲师水准吧. =/=

- 很明显整篇文章, 不停强调 MMU 过来的员工, 以及不满提高对员工的要求.

事实证明的确有很多资深讲师已经离开。至于中间是否牵扯到针对还是不公平对待,就只有他们本身最清楚。唯一可以肯定的是,好的讲师离开肯定是学生们的损失。

这里头所提到的几位教授,应该全部都是在FES的。而刚刚从mmu转来utar就成为professor的,就只有prof faidz, prof lee和prof chung。有错的话,拜托指正。

至于你所说的买了很多器材,show example, please.

不过我倒是赞同,新任的管理层所带来的改革,尤其针对engineering课程的改编,的确比以前好太多了。

新的器材,所知道是kampar FIST的新无线网器材。

在新policy下,有人欢喜有人愁。不过,如kkloh88所说得, “好的讲师离开肯定是学生们的损失“。

我的FYP supervisor 每年发表的论文都不止3张,而且几张的impact factor 还不是很低。。。事在人为。。。难怪他升职蛮快下

说实在的, 若他们硬要说出走风, 在我进UTAR 的第一个学期, 那时还没有换管理层, 就时常听到大家说讲师要走了.
但到现在, 三年多了, 我到不觉得走了几个,
至少, 我在这里三年, 除了走了一个好讲师, 还有走的是一个废才
就只觉得有些新进讲师也不错.
有走才会有进.

至于器材, 你可以去 Chemical Lab 看看, 这一两个学期, 真得添置了很多器材.
只是, 学生有时候真得"不听教", 一个百多千的器材就那样最近坏了一个.
PS: 名字不记得, 要查查, 因为那些器具, 都是 fyp 生, 或研究生才用到. lolz

无论如何, 不论他们是否
我觉得这篇报道, 更本是针对 MMU 过来的人. 更本没有客观评论.
而且, 上司提高对他们的要求, 也是应该的吧. 看看这之前, 效率策是多么的混乱.
反而是现在我觉得好多了.

Department PR 已经严重缺乏老师了...
不过,
提升水准是应该的...
我个人觉得对学生也有好处...
身为讲师基本上就应该具有一定的水准,
如果因为觉得压力太大就辞职的话。
那也是个人的选择,
应该选择如何抗压...
那么国外其他顶尖的大学,
比如牛津的讲师压力会比我们UTAR的讲师少吗?

因為報告錯誤導致同系整批的學生接近學期末才拿到ptptn,一次又一次的投訴只得到"UTAR has not improved over the year? please be fair. we do not wish to point fingers..." <-- 負責該系的職員這件事以後辭職了。離開以後她還不忘寄封電郵給學生慎重強調她離開不是因為這件事,只是“had been given a better offer” (Chiew Siao Mei, 2010)。
新學期有的學生完全沒有Student Bill(不然就是拿到別的科系的),其他就是不完整(少算一科),又是投訴了好多次才解決。前幾天一個Student Bill出錯的系友發現他被terminate了,因為還沒還錢。
講師說utar現在都聘請年輕剛出身的講師,目的是爲了跟學生更親近,沒有代溝。
講師說因為科系要得到政府的承認,所以要滿足他們的要求:
1. 要有industry background的教職員,所以我們很多課都是外面的工作人士在教的。可是“有料”跟“會不會教”好像是兩回事。聘請一個職業律師(非建築線)來教建築法律,這就是quality?
2. 因為政府要求某個科系要四年,所以很多科目都是重複再重複,本來三年可以結束的硬拖個四年。(教授自己說的)
至於facility,
1. 是有免費網絡設備,可是速度大多時候慢到鬼醬。
2. 是有免費打印機,可是只能印CADD圖。現在還特地聘請一個員工專坐在房間裏面盯著那個打印機。看到學生印其他文件馬上pause掉打印機(當然也有朋友說有時她裝沒看見)。平時經過都瞄到那位小姐在玩電腦遊戲。
3. 圖書館的古董打印機,很遺憾的,在小弟最需要它的時候,他媽的4架壞3架(最後一架沒有試)。最後只好到三樓影印中心印。價錢也不算便宜。
我不敢肯定這些是不是只有UTAR面對的問題,也不敢說是不是跟所謂UTAR地震有關係。可是這些都是近兩年發生的事情。

应该是他们。Lee Sze Wei 还是 Vice President & Director of IPSR. 教书还好,经验丰富。
Faidz 和 Chung Boon Kuan 就不知道。

Petaling Jaya, July 18 - UTAR president Datuk Prof Dr Chuah Hean Teik denied there was tampering of examination marks as alleged in an online news portal and stressed that the university’s senate complied with various quality control requirements.

Among the measures are having external examiners and frequent board of examination meetings.

“The low number of first class honours recipients shows Utar’s commitment to quality standards,” he said, adding that only 7.8% of the 2,570 graduates at next month’s convocation would receive first class honours," he said.

Chuah said UTAR had maintained a tradition of excellence and surveys showed that more than 97% of its students found employment within six months of graduating.

He added that in order to maintain the university’s excellent performance and results, academicians should also work equally hard.
“UTAR is a university and not a teaching college. People must understand this and research and development has to be a priority.

“The academic staff may be required to work harder and submit research papers but this is the standard procedure at any university,” he said, pointing out that UTAR had adequate research facilities with RM18mil invested over the last five years.

Chuah said all of UTAR’s degree programmes were audited by local or overseas external examiners, who would visit the varsity and provide feedback as to whether the courses were up to par with quality standards.

On a report in an online news portal about an exodus of UTAR’s academic staff due to several new policies, inadequate research facilities and the universitiy’s high-handed approach, Chuah said this was very unfair.

“My staff told me a reporter called to ask about the alleged staff turnover rate – nothing more.

There were no questions regarding the tampering of marks or the state of UTAR’s research facilities.

“How can one write such things without checking thoroughly?” he said.

Chuah also claimed that things had been blown out of proportion about the high turnover rate.

“UTAR had a staff of 800 when I first joined and there are more than 1,400 now. This is not possible if 30% of our academic staff and 70% of our support staff leave,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that there had been some inertia to on-going changes in UTAR, particularly in the area of research and development.

“It is understandable that not everyone is happy with the growing emphasis on research but one or two unhappy staff members cannot speak for the whole varsity,” he said.

Chuah assumed duties as UTAR president in March 2008.

(吉隆坡20日讯)根据《自由今日大马》的报导,大约30%的拉曼大学学术人员已经离职,因为最新的政策含有操纵学生成绩的元素。这些新的政策是由新的管理层所作出的,而他们都是来自多媒体大学(MMU)的管理层。

新管理层导致教职人员离职率奇高

根据拉曼大学内部的消息指出,自从这10人管理层接管拉曼大学后,学术人员的离职率提高了很多。这名消息人士也透露,新的管理层已经造成30%的学术人员以及70%的行政人员的离开。

“许多学术人员对于新的指令要求他们操纵和修改学生的分数感到非常震惊和反感。自从新的管理层接管之后,他们也替换了许多有经验的行政和学术人员。”

“自从这批来自多媒体大学的管理层从去年年初接管大学之后,已经把大学内的关键位置,包括主席、副主席、理事以及部门主任囊括在手。”

这名消息人士更爆料,有三位教授是在没有经过审核过程的情况下成为教授的。

“新的管理层作出多项新政策的宣布,其中要求助理教授一年完成一张研究论文、副教授一年必须完成两张研究论文,而教授则必须在一年内完成三张研究论文。问题是,拉曼大学根本没有足够的设施去进行研究工作。”

“任何申请购买新器材的过程都非常缓慢和冗长,再加上学术人员必须定时在5天内改完200份试卷,因此他们没有足够的时间去进行研究工作了。”

“学术人员拥有很繁重的工作,如果批改考卷出现错误的话,他们将会收到警告信。无论如何,倾向于多媒体大学管理层的系院院长都不必教课,就算没有如期完成研究论文也不会被对付。”

苛刻的政策对付不倾向于主席的职员

一位匿名Jansi的前拉曼大学行政人员表示,她离职的原因是因为新管理层傲慢的态度。

“我们被吩咐在会议上必须保持沉默,如果我们和新管理层起了争执的话就会被警告。那些比较多意见的人通常都被调到金宝(Kampar)的校园去,而这也包括那些新婚或刚生小孩的妈妈们。”Jansi表示。

“当职员写投诉信给主席时,他竟然表示管理层的决定就代表了他的意见。总的来说,管理层并没有资格独裁地决定所有事物,因为他们根本不知道校园内发生了什么事情。”

“在拉曼大学主席蔡贤德带领之下的管理层作出了很多苛刻的政策,来对付那些之前由黄丽绥推荐的职员。在他的领导下工作,我们并没有信心,有人能够想象一个组织竟然有305位职员离职吗?”

“在他们的操纵之下,学生的成绩都是假象,这都是为了维持大学的收生率,以及马华的收入。有一次,蔡贤德为了出去一名技术人员,竟然动用自己的权力来召开听证会,虽然人力资源部经理并没有找到任何这名技术人员所犯的错误,但是蔡贤德却私自篡改听证会的会议记录。最后,这名经理为了保住自己的职业道德而辞职了。”
