Background
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is located at the northernmost part of the Malaysian peninsula, less than 35 km from the borders of Thailand. Originally known as KUKUM (Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan Utara Malaysia, or Northern Malaysia University College of Engineering), it was approved by the Cabinet as a public institution of higher learning in May, 2001. Its first intake comprised 116 engineering students, who started classes in June, 2002. It now has about 4000 students, and a workforce of more than 800 people comprising academic and non-academic staff. There are 19 programmes leading to B. Eng and six programmes leading to Diploma (Eng), offered through eight engineering schools. There are also numerous postgraduate degree programmes on offer.

UniMAP boasts itself as a true-blue technical university which fulfills the interest of students who are inclined towards practical-based engineering education. UniMAP graduates are budding engineers who have been groomed to be competent and confident enough to explore entrepreneurial possibilities upon graduation. They are expected to not only exhibit excellence in knowledge and skills directly related to their engineering fields of study, but are also proficient in communication and ICT skills, as well as possessing unsurpassed traits of professionalism and patriotism. It is hoped that because their education has been excellent, they will become the engineering leaders of tomorrow. Indeed this is a testimony of UniMAP’s commitment to Engineering as a discipline.

In order to achieve maximum benefit for the country at large, the areas of focus of public technical universities are determined by the government. In the case of UniMAP, it was decided that electronic-based engineering should be the focus. However, this does not mean that there is no room for other disciplines of engineering to be developed here. Rather, all related fields of engineering and technology that can support the advancement of electronic-based engineering, can be offered.

Mission
To produce a holistic human capital that contributes to the nation’s development and industrial competitiveness agenda

Vision
An internationally competitive academic and research institution

Programmes
A) RESEARCH MODE

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD is an advanced degree that provides qualification for students who wish to pursue an academic or research career.  PhD program in UniMAP is offered to candidates who posses Masters degree in Engineering, in an area relevant to the candidate’s proposed area of research or attained first class honors in Bachelor’s degree of Engineering from an approved university.

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Master of Science is done by research without coursework.  Students are required to write a research proposal which includes, the title of the research project, objective of research, review of relevant scientific literature and an introduction to research methodology before performing an in depth investigation in a chosen area of research and preparing a thesis covering their methodology as well as the analysis and evaluation of their results. Students are initially closely supervised by their supervisors, but work more independently as they develop their research skills.  Masters programs are offered in:

Master of Science (Microelectronics Engineering)
Master of Science (Computer Engineering)
Master of Science (Communication Engineering)
Master of Science (Mechatronic Engineering)
Master of Science (Manufacturing Engineering)
Master of Science (Electrical System Engineering)
Master of Science (Materials Engineering)
Master of Science (Mechanical Engineering)
Master of Science (Product Design Engineering)
Master of Science (Environmental Engineering)
Master of Science (Bioprocess Engineering)
Master of Science (Electronic Biomedical Engineering)
Admission to Masters program in UniMAP requires candidates to attain a Bachelor degree in Engineering or equivalent from an approved university in an area relevant to the candidate’s proposed area of research or study or other equivalent qualification approved by Senate.

B) Mix Mode

MASTER OF SCIENCE (POLYMER ENGINEERING)

School of Materials Engineering, UniMAP is offering Master of Science (Polymer Engineering) by Mixed-Mode commencing November 2008.

Introduction
Polymer is a key to the most of the recent technology in the world. It covers areas ranging from the developments of plastic technology, thermoplastic elastomer, rubber technology, polymer composite, and their application in automotive industry and electronic polymer. It also includes introduction to electronic polymers and the influence of nano-structure on electronic phenomena and their application in cable and wire industry. Most of the applications are depending critically upon the availability of novel materials. Technological, economic and environmental pressures will ensure that the demand for such experts will increase during the 21st Century. This programme targets for graduates in appropriate science, engineering, or technological subject, e.g. chemistry, material science, material engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or production engineering.

Objective
This programme aims to prepare students for an active and effective professional role in the manufacturing industry and, particularly but not exclusively, in sectors related to the production and uses of polymer based on plastic, elastomer, thermoset and composites. The more specific objectives of the course are to develop the appropriate professional competence for the following functions:

•        Research and Development related to all aspects of polymer materials, processing methods and end use product.
•        Trouble shooting tasks related to materials formulations, polymer processing and failures in service.
•        Evaluation of performance of polymer to provide data for product design, specifications and quality control.
•        Characterization of the molecular composition and morphological structure of polymers and auxiliary materials.

Duration
1 year (2 semesters)

Registration Mode
Full Time

Entry Requirements
A good Bachelor degree in related engineering areas or equivalent in the relevant field from a recognised university.

English Requirements
Foreign students are required to have proficiency in written and spoken English in one of the following forms:
o        A minimum TOEFL score of 550; or
o        A minimum ELTS score of Band 6; or equivalent
